Works by Cuban-American Artist Cid Mendez to Show at Gallery 21, Newark, NJ
With a theme of health, peace and fortitude, Mendez will show a variety of pieces that go from custom furniture adaptation to recycled paper-mixed media art and a unique work on glass.
Continuing its tradition of representing local Cuban artists, Gallery 21 announced today the exhibition of Cid Mendez’s “Life is Beautiful”. This is the first opportunity for the public to view these works, which will be displayed starting September 20th and continue through October 5th.
“Life is Beautiful” represents the current works of Cid Mendez, which include a collection of custom furniture, light installations, recycled paper-mixed media art and belt buckle jewelry. The collection is dominated by his application of stained glass in a mosaic technique. “I’m very happy to show this collection with the general public and with fellow artists. The pieces come to life when darkness sets, as most of the collection contains some form of illuminated elements. There’s a soothing rich elegance to the entire collection, tropical colors dominate the palette, flowers and organic forms live in harmony on my pieces”, said Cid Méndez of his upcoming exhibition
Cid Mendez has lived in the Hudson County, NJ area since his arrival from Cuba in 1980. A self-taught artist, Cid has worked in different materials and has recently focused on working with glass. About the experience of working with glass Mendez has said: “ I love the luminescence properties of glass, the wide range of colors available and the flexibility it provides for my artistic visions.”
“We are very pleased to have Cid’s work showing at Gallery 21. Cid designs pieces that will continue to provide color stimulation when in darkness, he’s fascinated by the challenge of creating beautiful functional art in any space that he’s offered the opportunity to design. His artistic versatility, range and passion are clearly visible in all his works. ”, said Adela Rubio the director of Gallery 21.
